The Story of Maté Maté

Maté Maté didn’t start in a lab or a corporate boardroom.
It started with 13 good comrades.

For years we had been organising underground parties, cultural happenings, and small festivals around Copenhagen. 
Music, art, long nights and a strong sense of community. Those events brought together all kinds of people — and over time we started noticing something.
People wanted energy - But fewer people wanted the synthetic energy drinks. That’s when the idea started.

Discovering Yerba Maté

At some point we discovered Yerba Maté — a South American plant that has been consumed for centuries as a natural source of energy. Traditionally shared among friends, maté is as much about social connection as it is about stimulation.
It offers a clean, plant-based caffeine boost, often described as something between tea and coffee — focused energy without the heavy crash.
That philosophy resonated with us.

From Underground Culture to a Can

We first started experimenting when some friends brought home 5kg of the herbal tea from a journey in Argentina.
At first just for ourselves — brewing, tasting, adjusting. Back then our goal was simple: create a drink that packs a lot of energy - that works with vodka. Pretty basic stuff :) 
Something simple.
 Something honest.
 Something that actually tasted great.
Slowly the idea grew into something bigger.
What started as curiosity among friends turned into a project — and eventually into Maté Maté.

What is Yerba Maté?

Yerba maté is a traditional South American plant used to make a naturally energizing infusion. It comes from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree, which grows mainly in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.

For centuries, indigenous communities such as the Guaraní people have consumed maté for its stimulating and restorative properties. 
Today it remains a central part of daily life across much of South America.

Yerba maté naturally contains caffeine, along with a range of plant compounds, vitamins, and antioxidants. 
The result is a clean, balanced energy often described as something between coffee and tea — focused, smooth, and long-lasting.

Traditionally, maté is brewed with hot water and shared among friends from a hollow gourd using a metal straw called a bombilla
